For students and parents in Alberta, under the Personal Information Protection Act (PIPA). Effective October 30, 2026. Questions: privacy@notcooked.ca
1. Who we are and what this covers
Not Cooked is an online math tutor for Alberta students in Grades 9 to 12. This notice explains how we collect, use, disclose and protect personal information about students and parents, as required by Alberta's Personal Information Protection Act (PIPA).
Our Privacy Officer answers questions about this notice and handles access, correction and deletion requests. Email privacy@notcooked.ca.
2. What we collect
Account details: email address, password (stored only in hashed form) or Google sign-in, account type (parent or student) and the date you consented to this notice.
Profile: a first name or nickname, the math course you picked and your weekly goal.
Learning records: practice answers (topic, difficulty, right or wrong, hints used), timed exam scores and time used, and active study minutes per day.
Tutor chats: the messages you type or say to Chef (voice is turned into text on your device; no audio is sent to us), Chef's replies, and homework photos you choose to upload.
Family links: which parent account is linked to which student, and invite links a parent creates.
We do not ask for birthdate, school, address, phone number, government ID, or social media, and we don't use advertising or tracking cookies. Please don't put personal details in chats; Chef is told never to ask for them.
3. Why we collect it
Only to provide the tutor: sign you in, save progress and chats, choose practice that fits your course, generate Chef's replies, show progress to a linked parent, keep the service secure, and fix problems.
We collect only what is reasonable for these purposes (PIPA sections 11 and 16). We don't sell personal information or use it for advertising.
4. Consent, including students under 18
We rely on your consent. A parent or guardian can create a family account, agree to this notice and invite their teen. Students 14 and over may also sign up themselves and agree to this notice; they can link a parent later.
You can withdraw consent at any time by deleting chats, turning off a parent link, or asking us to delete the account. Some features stop working without the information they need, and we'll tell you which.
5. Who can see what
Students see everything in their own account.
A linked parent sees summaries only: problems done, accuracy, study time, exam scores, achievement levels by Alberta outcome, and how many Chef sessions there were per topic. Parents never see chat text, Chef's replies, the questions asked, or photos. This keeps a teen's learning conversations private while giving parents a clear picture of progress.
A student can turn a parent link off at any time from Progress, which immediately ends that parent's access.
Our staff access records only when needed to support you, keep the service secure, or meet a legal obligation.
6. Service providers and AI
We use service providers to run Not Cooked: Lovable (app hosting, database, sign-in and email delivery) and the Lovable AI Gateway, which sends chat text and photos to an AI model provider to produce Chef's replies. They may only use the information to provide their service to us.
Requests to the AI model are sent with storage turned off. Student conversations are never used to train or improve any AI model, by us or by our providers.
Our providers may store or process information outside Canada, including in the United States, where it may be accessible to authorities under local law. You can ask our Privacy Officer about our policies for providers outside Canada (PIPA section 13.1).
We disclose personal information to others only with your consent or where the law requires or permits it.
7. How long we keep it
We keep account and learning records while the account is open. Parent views show the last 120 days of practice and the last year of exam sittings.
Deleted chats and photos are removed from the app straight away. When an account is deleted we remove its personal information within 30 days, except where the law requires us to keep it longer.
8. How we protect it
Connections are encrypted, passwords are hashed, and database rules make sure each person can read only their own records. Parent summaries come from restricted functions that never return chats, photos or email addresses.
If a breach creates a real risk of significant harm, we will notify affected people and Alberta's Information and Privacy Commissioner as PIPA requires.
9. Your rights
You can ask to see the personal information we hold about you, how it has been used and who it was disclosed to, ask us to correct it, or ask us to delete your account. Email privacy@notcooked.ca. We reply within 45 days, as PIPA requires, and may need to confirm your identity first.
You can change your email or password in Account settings and delete chats or photos from History yourself at any time.
If you're not satisfied with our answer, you can contact the Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner of Alberta (oipc.ab.ca).
10. Changes to this notice
If we make a significant change, we'll show it in the app and ask for consent again where needed. The effective date at the top shows the current version.
